Joe Is Curious; Curtis Thinks We're Doing Things Well

Sure, we're now hypersensitive to everything and we're downright pissed off about this season, this coaching staff, the fact that I ordered cheese fries at Ross-Ade last weekend and the guy filled the cup of fries to the brim with cheese and then gave me a blank stare when I asked if they had forks... I'm telling you, everything sucks right now.

I then read this story on ESPN.com about how Tiller is becoming impatient with Curtis. Fine, let's see what they say.

First, I like that ESPN bylines it with "INDIANAPOLIS" -- probably where they think Purdue is, or, more likely, they figure it's the only city in Indiana.

Anyway, it's a typical Purdue article -- we don't know what happened! (Hint: 3-stars often lose to 5-stars.) And it's getting old to see the coach completely clueless. Coaches are supposed to have answers, solutions, plans.... something. Being curious and wondering when everything will sort itself out is something that WE can f-cking do!

Joe?

"I don't think you can put your finger on one thing and say, well, he's [Painter] not doing this. He's doing what's being asked of him."

Maybe you need to be asking him to go through a progression rather than staring down one receiver and then firing a laser at knock-down-able heighth.

Painter knows he needs to deal with Tiller's most significant gripe, accuracy on the deep ball. Ironically, Painter took over for Brandon Kirsch in 2005 because Kirsch struggled to connect on long throws.

"I don't know that there's a solution," Painter said. "Just keep practicing, keep going for them. Sooner or later, you'll hit those."

Yes, much like chipping golf balls at a bucket, you should just keep sailing them out there... eventually, one might land where it's supposed to. Law of averages, right?

Joe must have then been asked about Painter on the road, against a ranked opponent, in a place where Purdue would have trouble winning if OSU had only 8 players on the field... so what's Joe's approach?

"You know, I'll be curious," Tiller said. "I'm like you guys. I want to see how he snaps back from this. I think that will give us an indication of where he's headed in the future and where we're headed."

*sigh*

No, Joe, you're not like us guys. You're the head effing football coach. You are supposed to have a plan to deal with things. For F's sake, just say you have a plan of attack! Say you're going to "try some new things." Do something to make us believe you're not just playing out the string. Make us fricking believe. We so desperately want to believe.

Meanwhile, Curtis is drinking kool-aid:

Painter said the Boilermakers aren't far from having the kind of potent offense their fans are used to.

"We've lost a few games, and we feel like we should have been in them a little bit more than we were," he said. "We're doing things well. I think we're just close. Hopefully we'll click soon."

Wait, I'm sorry.... we're....doing....things.....................well?

Sorry, I almost vomited a little bit there. It was hard to even type it. If Curtis thinks we're doing things well, then... well.... we're as screwed as we thought.

15 chunks of gibberish:

Nate said...

"we're as screwed as we thought."

Indeed.

I want to get mad, but I can't. Maybe I'm drinking too much of the water out here in Utah (they put Prozac in it, if you didn't know). At this point, I look at it like this - Joe's gone. He's already left the building. Next year will be new - everything a bit different (though the D-coordinator will look the same...). I want to know if 2009 will be like 1997. As far as 2008 goes - meh!

YES! J-Money you are on fire with this one! Make sure that boilerdowd takes a look at this before he goes to his next Curtis Painter Fan Club meeting.

You also picked up on the same phrasing that has been giving me fits this season. From top to bottom, this team keeps talking about things "coming together," about "improving every week" and how "soon" they will be a good football team.

Uh, aren't teams supposed to perform at a high level BEFORE the season starts?!

GREAT post - congrats.

Dozer, thanks for the props.

And to clarify, B-dowd isn't a huge fan of Painter... trust me. His point remains that the mediocre performance and complete inability to beat non-MAC teams starts at the top and has far more to do with the coaching staff than Curtis Painter or Chris Summers. Sure, they should be playing better, but do you think they're being pushed in practice?

Our sources say no.

Again with the "sources"! I want sources.

I'll have to concede to Boiled Sports' insider information. As a not-so-casual outside observer, I can only complain about what I see from week to week.

I would also like to make a public apology to boilerdowd for the "CP Fan Club" accusation. That was uncalled for.

apology accepted, dozer.

Painter is as delusional as the old man at this point...and that's been my point all along. The system is the system is the system is the system...Granted, Joey Elliott hasn't been entrenched in it as long as CP, but he'll still be playing within it.

My sources say Elliott is a real gamer...in other words, he must practice like dog food. Clearly, Painter is a gym rat and probably a practice hero; but he hasn't shown any of that on Saturdays this fall.

Remember Brandon Jones? Supposedly that guy practiced like an old lady, but he played like a mother on Saturday...he always seemed to make plays; perhaps Joey is similar...or perhaps he's only played in games when the defensive unit is either bored or asleep already. Who knows. It is awfully hard to know with the shallow depth of knowledge from which we're drinking.

1) While the story with the Indy byline was on ESPN.com the story was written by the AP, not ESPN.

2) The AP story as published without the name of the writer. This "anonymous" AP story was most likely written by some hack intern wannabe journalist that has never watched a single college football game and thinks taking the subway to Brooklyn as leaving town. This intern, wary of having a prank played on them "corrected" West Lafayette to Indianapolis* as the intern damn well knew that there is no West Lafayette. Everybody knows Lafayette runs North/South from 9th down to Spring St. West Lafayette? Please.

*The intern choose Indianapolis as it is the only town in Indiana they have ever heard of, there are no cities.

"The intern chose Indianapolis as it is the only town in Indiana they have ever heard of, there are no cities."

That doesn't stop them from occasionally reporting from "Notre Dame, IN".

Cue the NFL Films'(TM) clip of the late, great Vince Lombardi: "What the HELL is going ON out there?!!" All kidding aside, if I were in Coach Tiller's shoes, I really wouldn't want to talk about any of it either!

As far as the dateline, maybe Coach & Painter were in Indy for some reason or another and that's where interviews took place; that probably isn't the case, but a possibility. Some say it could be a "hack intern wannabe journalist that has never watched a single college football game"... hmmm, that could be any number of IU students - that MUST be it.

Cap'n -- I always thought that was Hank Stramm, no?

Captain Mañana said...

You know J, when I first heard it as a plug for a sports network or sports publication, I looked up at the tv fully expecting to see Hank Stram on the screen, but it was Vince Lombardi; I like how you think though (until it comes to #3! hee-hee).

I am sure Hank Stram asked that of of few of his teams too. You know Stram grew up in Gary, IN and played and coached at Purdue; he was an assistant football coach 1948-1955 and the baseball coach from 1951-1955. God Bless Hank Stram!

I think Tiller already gave up ont he first half and pictures taking the four games we need int he second half (Indiana, Minnesota, Iowa, and either NW of Michigan) so we can get back to Detroit.

zlionsfan said...

I think he pictures fly-fishing in Wyoming.

I would like to believe that we can win four more games this season. I would also like to believe that someone currently employed by the Purdue athletic department knows how this can be done.

Until I see evidence of that, I will continue rocking quietly back and forth on Saturday afternoons. (Sundays, too, but that is a whole other story.)
