We'll have more later...but the thrashing that the Badgers just handed Purdue showed us how far Purdue has to go before being anything more than a punchline for the B1G.
So last year, Purdue played UND tough and lost in the closing minutes...but got worked by Wisconsin...BUT this season, they lose a close one to UND and get manhandled in Madison.
No steps forward...the backward momentum continues.
I heard another coach's first year being reviewed by some talking heads on EsPN...and they said that while the team wasn't winning a lot, the coach was setting a tone. Well, if Hazell is setting a tone, it sounds a lot like the brown note that Danny Hope's teams used to make.
The defense played their worst game of the season, Henry's accuracy and decision-making were, once-again, questionable...and that's the most- syrupy-sugar coating I can give it.
Purdue was out-manned at every position, out-coached, out-played and little more than a speed bump to Wisconsin's road graders. Sure, Wisconsin was angry...but Purdue showed it surely wasn't in the wake of the Notre Dame loss. They looked starry eyed and shocked as a seven point deficit quickly swelled and the game got out of hand in the second quarter.
So we're now four games into the third or fourth-straight season in which only die-hards can even stomach Purdue games versus the conference's elite...that stinks.
Next up, homecoming v. NIU next Saturday.
The players Hope recruited are a horrid match-up against Wisky. There is no way this set of players would ever stop a power run game like Wisconsin. What was Hudson supposed to do? He tried stacking the box with 8/9 players, and it didn't help. It doesn't matter how quick a player is if he cant tackle.
On the offensive side, what I didn't understand was why, with the game out of hand, were there no shots downfield? At least this would allow the young receivers to get experience going after balls and beating corners. As for feeding Appleby to the lions in garbage time, I understand the sentiment. But, not against Wisky in Camp Randall. Hazell is obviously keeping the timing of that decision close to the vest. I don't blame him; as long as Appleby gets his shot before the half way point of the season.
Danny Hope used Henry to Henry's strength, RUNNING. The broken play for his touchdown showed his ability. Why don't we run the option? All but the ND game, his passing has been horrid. The announcers kept saying how Hazell wants to bring a running to Purdue...UGH...I remember another coach who said that...Fred Akers, how'd that work out for us?
And oh yeah the team down south is scoring at will each week running an offense that fits with their talent. I don't want ohio states offense because we will never have their athletes
When is the rob henry joke going to end? Put someone else in and see what happens. Couldn't be any worse. He has had four games and it is obvious the sheer inability to throw anything past ten yards is a joke. If they don't attempt to make a change then we got the wrong guy. Which to be honest I had thought from the get go. Purdue will never be a power style offensive team. We tried it with colletto and it didn't work.
@pub76 Agreed. Though the head coach and two coordinators have forgotten more football knowledge than I'll ever learn, it seems to me that Purdue is having great difficulty running a pro-style offense. Even Michigan is having trouble, and they installed a pro-style set last year for Devin Gardner and the best left tackle in the Conference. Instead, Purdue could run a simpler "no talent" offense such as the Double Wing , Wing-T, or even the good old "full house" T-formation. Lots of traps, double team blocking at the point of attack, pulling guards, "waggles" [play action passes off the "buck" or inside sweep], QB keeper, power and belly. Most offenses already have these plays in their playbooks.
@pub76 Their dream season has them at 2-2 after four home games...uh oh, IU fans.
@winamacboiler Yup. But only because we learned a lot about Purdue in the ISU game. This team couldn't rush against a peewee football team.
@PurdueMatt You win a week of seething!!
I think the one thing they will not let any of us forget is the butt whoopin we all know is coming at the end of the year
