*STRETCHES* -- *OFFICIAL BS LEADERS**MAC COACHES* -- *OLD(ISH) GUYS**THE INTRIGUING* -- *EXXXTRA RISKY*
We’ve been alluding to our coaching list for a while and this week we’ll begin to roll it out. Because he doesn’t sleep, Aneesh cobbled together a spreadsheet of candidates that not only included almost everyone who has ever coached or will ever coach, it also had categories….and within the category of “There’s Some Universe/Scenario In Which This Coach Could Coach Purdue” (yes, a real quote), he even had mother-effing tiers of coaches.
The rest of the BS crew then weighed in on these lists and provided their “stretches” as well as “realistic targets” (as Neeshy dictatorially ordered us around, threatened nut-punches and all). While we included "realistic" stretches such as Les Miles (currently unemployed, perhaps looking for a reclamation project) and Kevin Sumlin (Purdue guy) because you can find a universe in which them being Purdue’s coach actually makes sense, we didn’t include guys like *ahem* likely Texas HC Tom Herman because he’s as likely to coach Purdue as Nick Saban.
Within the "Realistic" Candidate List you’ve got tiers 1-5, ranked from the combination of most desirable/qualified to least, or perhaps more risky/unproven. We then ruled out some of the biggest no-names or guys who just didn’t appear on enough of our lists to warrant assessing (naturally, one of these guys will be who Purdue hires).
The write-ups about each candidate on our list will be broken down in a semi-organized and consistent way. That is:
Candidate Tier -- "Who Is He?" -- "Why would he be successful at Purdue?" -- "Why could he flop at Purdue?" -- "Would he come to Purdue?"
We think the questions of why he could be successful and why he could flop are of particular interest, since some coaches are program builders, while others are ass-kickers. Let’s assess both the upside and the downside, knowing what we’ve seen over the past 20 years (mostly sustain success from Tiller, followed by the slide into mediocrity with Hope, followed by the sledgehammer into the pit of despair and irrelevancy of Hazell).
Away we go. This should be fun.
