Reminder: The Boilermakers Are America
This August, Matt Painter’s Boilermakers will be exchanging their black and old gold for red, white and blue and dear god please nobody get hurt.
Purdue will be the USA entrant in the World University Games in Chinese Tapei this August. In just over two months, Purdue plays a couple of warm-up games in high school gyms (is this b/c Mackey has no A/C?) in Carmel (Aug 11) and Lafayette Jeff (Aug 12). Then they head off to play in a 24-team, world cup-style tournament on the other side of the world.
The World University Games are played every other year. Kansas was the US rep in 2015 and won gold. No pressure, guys.
The schedule was released today and I hope you’re ready to breakfast club it, boys and girls. Purdue plays five games in six days in pool play:
Sunday, August 20: 5:30 p.m. -- USA vs. Argentina / Taipei Arena (5:30 a.m. ET)
Monday, August 21: 3 p.m. -- USA vs. United Arab Emirates / University of Taipei Gymnasium (3 a.m. ET)
Wednesday, August 23: 5:30 p.m. -- USA vs. Czech Republic / Taipei Arena (5:30 a.m. ET)
Thursday, August 24: 3 p.m. -- USA vs. Romania / Taipei Arena (3 a.m. ET)
Friday, August 25: 12:30 p.m. -- USA vs. Estonia / Taipei Arena (12:30 a.m. ET)
Then they move into bracket play (which reportedly will be partially at an elementary school). Man, I’m tired just thinking about it.
I asked Chris Forman via Twitter if the games are expected to be televised and then I remembered that not even all their games in the United States are televised. We’ll, of course, do our best to keep you apprised of how the team looks during this tournament which will either be pointed to as a reason Purdue looks so sharp in 2017-18 or the excuse for why they’re so gassed.
